Hotel furniture works harder than furniture anywhere else. A lobby sofa or restaurant chair is used all day, every day, by hundreds of guests. The fabric you choose decides how the room looks in year one and in year five. Here is what to check before you order.
1. Durability
Ask for the abrasion rating, usually given as Martindale rubs. For hotel and restaurant seating, buyers commonly look for 40,000 rubs or more. Bedroom headboards and decorative cushions can use lighter fabrics.
2. Cleaning and stain protection
Spills happen. A fabric with a stain-resistant treatment lets staff wipe up most spills before they soak in. Ask whether the treatment is applied to the finished fabric, and how it should be cleaned.
3. Fire safety
Rules differ by country and by project. Ask your supplier which fire standard the fabric meets, and check it against what your project or hotel brand requires before you order.
4. Colour and light
Fabrics near windows, or in outdoor and pool areas, fade faster. Ask for UV protection and check how the colour holds up in sunlight.
5. Pattern size
Large patterns look beautiful but use more fabric, because the pattern has to line up across the furniture. Plan your quantity with that in mind.
6. Matching and reordering
You may need more fabric a year later for repairs or a new floor. Choose a supplier who can repeat the same colour and design, and ask about lead times up front.
7. Always ask for samples
Look at the real fabric, in the real room, under the real lighting, before you decide.
