Designers often ask whether to use jacquard or printed fabric. Both can look excellent. They are made in very different ways, and each suits different jobs.
Jacquard: the pattern is woven in
On a jacquard loom, the pattern is created by the threads themselves as the fabric is woven. The design has texture, and it cannot wear off because it is part of the fabric.
Good for:
- Sofas, armchairs and dining chairs that get heavy use.
- Classic, rich designs with a raised, woven look.
- Projects that need a fabric to last many years.
Printed fabric: the pattern is applied to the surface
In digital sublimation printing, the design is printed onto a fabric base, usually polyester. The result can show fine detail, photographic images and a very wide range of colours.
Good for:
- Curtains, cushions and decorative pieces.
- Custom artwork or a design made just for your project.
- Smaller quantities where a special design is needed.
How to decide
- **Heavy daily use:** jacquard.
- **Custom artwork or photo-style designs:** print.
- **Classic, textured look:** jacquard.
- **A very specific colour palette:** ask about both. Colours can be matched more freely in print.
You can also mix them: jacquard on the main seating and printed cushions or curtains to match.
